How long does unopened wine last?
The short answer first, then the reasons.
Most wine is made to be opened within one to three years of its release, and is at its best there. A smaller share — reds with tannin and acidity to spare, the great sweet wines, vintage Port — keeps for a decade or more and improves on the way. How a bottle is stored decides whether it reaches even the shorter number.
What lets a wine keep
A wine lasts on what it has to spare. Acidity keeps it fresh; tannin, in reds, is a frame that softens slowly rather than collapsing; sugar is a preservative, and alcohol, in a fortified wine, is another; and concentration, the sheer amount of fruit and extract, gives the years something to work on. A light, fruity wine has little of any of these, which is why it is made to be drunk young. None of this shows on the price tag, though the two often travel together.
Rough ranges, by style
Counted from the vintage on the label, with the bottle kept cool and dark. These are ranges, not promises; a single wine can fall well outside them.
| Style | How long it keeps |
|---|---|
| Everyday white and rosé | 1–2 years |
| Everyday red | 2–3 years |
| Non-vintage sparkling | 1–3 years |
| Fuller whites with acidity, such as white Burgundy, Riesling and Chenin Blanc | 3–10 years |
| Structured reds, such as Bordeaux, Barolo, Rioja Reserva and Napa Cabernet | 5–15 years, the best longer |
| Vintage Champagne | 5–15 years |
| Vintage Port, Sauternes, Tokaji and other sweet wines | 20 years and more, often decades |
“Lasts” and “improves” are different words. An everyday red kept for three years is still sound; it has simply spent its fruit. Only the wines in the lower rows gain anything from the wait. For how to tell when a given bottle is at its best, see When is my wine ready to drink?; this page is about the outside edge, not the sweet spot.
Storage decides
Every number above assumes a bottle kept near 55°F (13°C), in the dark, on its side, undisturbed. Each departure shortens the range. At 75°F (24°C) a wine ages roughly twice as fast as at 55°F; a summer in a garage can take years from it. Light, and sunlight above all, breaks a wine down from the top; a bottle on a sunny counter can be gone in months. Standing upright for years lets the cork dry, shrink and admit air. A screwcap closes that last door, but not the first two.
Signs a bottle has gone past
- The fill has dropped well below the neck, or the cork has pushed up or leaked: air has been getting in.
- A white has turned deep gold or brown; a red has gone brick-colored to the rim, with no purple left.
- The nose is flat, or smells of sherry, nuts, vinegar or wet cardboard where fruit used to be.
- In the glass, the fruit is gone and the acid and alcohol are all that remain.
Browning and a nutty nose are what a wine does when it has met too much oxygen. A wine past its best is still wine, only a lesser one; its place now is the kitchen pot.
Where Verreful comes in
Every bottle with a vintage carries an estimated drinking window from the house — aging, ready, at peak or past peak — and the shelf shows it at a glance, so the ranges above are read against the bottles you own rather than against a table. Verreful lays out your cooler’s real shelves and zones, and every bottle keeps its place; the one that has quietly drifted past its window is pointed out before it is a surprise. Point the camera at a label and the house reads the wine and says plainly whether it suits your palate — or says so when it cannot be sure.

Her sapma aralığı kısaltır.
